Nematodes (Nematoda) are a phylum of protostomes, including both free-living and parasitic species. They play an important role in soil formation and decomposition of organic matter, and can cause diseases in plants, animals, and humans. In agriculture, parasitic nematodes pose a threat to crops, but there are also species used for biological pest control. The classification of nematodes remains a subject of debate, but modern molecular studies continue to clarify their phylogeny.
