This paper examines the possibilities of genetic modification of bacteria for the
synthesis of biopolymers — environmentally friendly and biodegradable materials.
Examples of genetically modified strains producing such polymers as polyhydroxyalkanoates and bacterial cellulose are given. The
importance of using genetic engineering methods to increase product yield and expand the
spectre of synthesized compounds is emphasized. The main advantages
of the technology and its prospects in industrial biotechnology are noted. Genetic
modification of bacteria is one of the key areas of modern biotechnology and
allows the effective use of microorganisms to obtain valuable bioproducts, including biopolymers,
approaches to creating genetically modified strains capable of synthesizing biodegradable
polymers are considered. The main genes involved in biosynthesis processes and methods of
transferring them to model organisms are described. The advantages of using GMO bacteria — high productivity, process controllability — are noted. The importance of developing this area for creating sustainable alternatives to traditional plastic materials is emphasized.
