Endophytes are microorganisms that colonize plant tissues. They are classified into systemic and non-systemic, as well as clavicipitic and non-clavicipitic. Systemic endophytes live in plants permanently, while non-systemic endophytes can become pathogenic. Clavicipitic endophytes infect grasses and are transmitted through seeds, while non-clavicipitic endophytes are found in various tissues and help plants adapt to stress.
