This thesis covers the essence of life and the main properties of living things. The complexity and comprehensiveness of life are explained through the definitions of life given by various scientists. The features of life, such as the unity of chemical composition, cellular structure, open systematicity, energy and substance metabolism, self-renewal, reproduction, growth, development, self-regulation, response to external influences, heredity and variability, are systematically described. The levels of structure of life are also considered as step-by-step biological systems, ranging from molecule, cell, tissue, organ, organism, population and biosphere
