This thesis analyzes the foreign policy of the Afghan Emir Abdurahman Khan in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The study is conducted within the context of the “Great Game” between the British and Russian empires, and highlights the Emir’s balanced approach based on the interests of the Afghan people. The examples of the Panjdeh conflict (1885) and the Durand Agreement (1893) demonstrate his cautious efforts to preserve Afghan sovereignty. The Emir’s cautious strategy is also evaluated as a relevant geopolitical model for small states
