Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), also known as Devic syndrome and its broader spectrum disorders (NMOSD), is a group of autoimmune diseases of the central nervous system. The disease affects the optic nerves, spinal cord, brainstem, and, rarely, the supratentorial areas of the brain. It can sometimes be confused with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This article reviews NMO and its current treatment options, including immunosuppressive therapy and plasmapheresis. The article is written in a review style and is based on available clinical data.
