Abstract

This article covers general and modern scientific views on Alzheimer's disease. In particular, the history, causes of the disease and mechanisms of pathogenesis are analyzed. The mechanisms of action of the main drugs currently used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, including cholinesterase inhibitors and NMDA receptor antagonists, are also reviewed. In addition, the article discusses, along with traditional treatment methods aimed at slowing down the disease, new scientific studies aimed at treating Alzheimer's disease, in particular, modern approaches related to the energy balance of brain cells and the NAD⁺ molecule. These studies may reveal the possibilities of not only slowing down the disease in the future, but also reversing its progression. The article aims to provide a deeper understanding of Alzheimer's disease and shed light on promising areas of its treatment.
