The deductive method has long been one of the most traditional approaches to teaching grammar in foreign language education. It is characterized by the explicit presentation of grammatical rules followed by practice activities. Despite its widespread use, particularly in teacher-centered classrooms, this method has been increasingly criticized within communicative and learner-centered paradigms. The present article examines the major disadvantages of the deductive method in grammar instruction, focusing on its cognitive, psychological, and pedagogical limitations. Drawing on established theoretical and empirical literature, the study highlights how deductive grammar teaching may reduce learner engagement, limit communicative competence, and fail to accommodate individual learning differences. The article also discusses how overreliance on rule explanation can hinder implicit language acquisition and negatively affect learner motivation.
